The Vital Role of Healthy Gums
COSMETIC GUM SURGERY
A beautiful, healthy-looking smile is the result of several factors working in harmony, with your gum tissue playing a crucial role. The gums that surround and support your teeth significantly influence the overall appearance of your smile. For instance, excessive gum tissue can make your teeth appear smaller, leading to what is commonly referred to as a 'gummy smile.' Conversely, receding gums can make your teeth look elongated, exposing tooth or root surfaces that were once covered, or create an uneven gum line.
To address these issues, we specialize in gum grafting and contouring procedures, also known as gum reshaping, gum lifting, or crown lengthening. These treatments are designed to restore balance and proportion to your smile. By carefully reshaping the gum tissue or adding to it where necessary, we can dramatically enhance the aesthetics of your smile, ensuring that it looks as healthy and radiant as it feels. The transformation achieved through these procedures can be truly remarkable, contributing significantly to the overall harmony and appeal of your smile.

✺ Excess Tissue
When excess gum tissue covers more of the tooth crown than is normal, we can perform a crown lengthening procedure, in which we will remove gum tissue (and sometimes a small amount of bone tissue) to expose more tooth surface.
✺ DENTAL CROWN-LENGTHENING PROCEDURE
Your dentist and our periodontist could recommend a crown lengthening procedure in order to perform a cosmetic alteration or a complete dental restoration.
If your tooth has a cavity or is broken below the gum line, or if your tooth structure is too insufficient to be restored, we will proceed to extend the crown to adjust the level of the gums and bone and expose a larger area of the tooth structure, making it possible to restore the tooth.
During the elongation of a dental crown, the gum tissue and excess bone will be reshaped to better expose the natural tooth. This procedure can be performed on a single tooth or on several teeth to achieve the natural smile you want.
✺ GUM GRAFT FOR RECEEDING GUMS
When gum thickness is reduced and gum height recedes over time, the roots of the teeth are bared, and the risk of tooth sensitivity and tooth decay increases. In such a case, a gum graft should be considered. This procedure involves removing a piece of healthy skin from the palate to graft it to the deficient gum. This keeps the receding gum from progressing.
Grafts not only improve the beauty of your smile and protect roots; they can also reduce tooth sensitivity while slowing any further recession and bone loss.
✺ FIBEROTOMY AND FRENECTOMY
In some cases, following orthodontic treatment, the teeth may tend to return to their original positions; this is caused by the elastic nature of the gum tissue. To prevent this from happening, we perform a fiberotomy, a local-anesthetic procedure that consists of splitting the fibers in the gingiva.
A frenectomy is a minor surgery recommended when the ligament connecting the cheeks and gums (called the brake) creates a gap between the front teeth.
